THE END OF THE SQUIRREL HIGHWAY…

SOME SADNESS HAS BEFALLEN THE SQUIRREL HIGHWAY THAT I HAVE WATCHED FOR MANY YEARS FROM “A WINDOW INTO THE WOODS.” 

THE TWO ASH TREES THAT THE SQUIRRELS USED FOR SAFE AND EASY ACCESS TO THE TREATS THAT I PUT OUT FOR THEM, HAD TO BE CUT DOWN. THE TREES HAD BEEN DEAD FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN LONG AGO. 

OUR SON, WHO DEFINITELY KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE A CHAINSAW, CAME HOME FOR HIS SISTER’S WEDDING. WHILE THE BRIDESMAIDS WERE HAVING A FUN TIME PUTTING THEIR MAKEUP ON BEFORE WE LEFT FOR THE WEDDING, THE ASH TREES WERE BEING TAKEN DOWN RIGHT OUTSIDE THE WINDOW…..TALK ABOUT A STRANGE COMBINATION OF PRE-WEDDING ACTIVITIES.

IT WAS PROBABLY A GOOD THING THAT I WAS PREOCCUPIED, OR I WOULD HAVE HAD A HARD TIME WATCHING THE “SQUIRREL TREES” COME DOWN. THIS PAST WEEK, I SPENT SEVERAL DAYS PICKING UP SMALL TWIGS AND CARRYING AND STACKING THE LOGS. TOMORROW, I’LL BE DRAGGING THE BRANCHES TO A MORE CONVENIENT LOCATION FOR PICK UP.

THE GOOD NEWS…THE SQUIRRELS DON’T SEEM TO MISS THE TREES ALL THAT MUCH…THEY ARE STILL SHOWING UP EACH AFTERNOON AND PUTTING ON A SHOW FOR ME…BUT I WILL MISS THE TREES…AS SOON AS MY MUSCLES STOP HURTING FROM ALL OF THE YARD WORK.

“STOP ALL THAT WHINING ZANNYRO…THE SUN IS GOING TO COME UP IN ABOUT EIGHT HOURS AND YOU NEED YOUR REST. I WANT YOU OUT IN THE YARD BRIGHT AND EARLY, HARD AT WORK…I’VE INVITED FRIENDS OVER TO WATCH YOU GET ALL TANGLED UP IN THE PILES OF TREE BRANCHES THAT ARE ON THE GROUND…WE SQUIRRELS LOVE TO LAUGH AND WE NEVER GET TIRED OF LAUGHING AT YOU!”

  2. I hate having to cut down trees… feels like a little death…but sometimes you have to do it for safety. Hopefully the soil will be good and you can replant? Love your squirrel photos!

    1. Thank you Susan..I hope to have a lot more..they come to visit every day.
      I hauled the remains of the two trees today…around the house to the driveway to be picked up…exhausted….but boy did I move when there was a sudden loud rumble of thunder!

  5. I am sure you begin to watch them from another. You could always plant a replacement tree – even though it may be too small for the squirrels.

    1. I planted a new “baby” apple tree last fall…in fact three all told, and the winter killed them off. Before the winter got to do that though, the squirrels would come by and nibble off the bark!

        1. A fourth apple tree that had been planted by my Father, who is now deceased and our oldest son when he was a little boy, died….and that same son was the one who ended up having to cut it down. 😦

    1. I’ve loved trees since I was very young…but when they become a threat to the house, they’ve got to go….but from now on…no planting trees near the house…then they can provide habitat until the day that they crumble.

      1. You’re exactly right about having them too close to the house. Our firs are too close for comfort in some of our severe winter storms, but the trees are so huge now, there would be a major outcry in the neighbourhood if we cut them.

People feel very protective of trees, don’t they…I’m sure it is scary during your winter storms…We have some HUGE sycamore trees at the edge of the woods…hopefully we’re far enough away from them in the event of a high wind…the prospect of a tornado blasting through here is scary..we’ve had so many severe storms this year…one just last night.
