There was an VERY big surprise visitor in the backyard a week or so back.
Earlier in the day, I had seen a bird circling and it was at least a half mile away…it looked fairly large, even from that distance.
Three hours later I noticed a BIG shape in a sycamore tree…and there it was…the red tail hawk. It was a fair distance away, but I took a photo anyway with the expected blurry results.
Imagine my surprise when it turned around on the branch and looked toward where I was looking through the window. Leaning forward, it left the branch and it was off and flying… I captured another blurry image.
It took a second for me to register the fact that the amazing predator was gliding down to the ground, where it landed twenty feet from the window.
Look how well it blends in with it’s surroundings! It was such a thrill to see this magnificent bird so closely.
I HAD BEEN TAKING THIS SQUIRREL’S PICTURE FOR QUITE A WHILE WHEN I FINALLY REALIZED THAT HE WANTED ME TO COME OVER AND HELP HIM HOLD UP THE TREE.
RIGHT AFTER THIS, I PUT THE CAMERA DOWN AND WE STOOD TOGETHER FOR, OH…AT LEAST AN HOUR AND HELD THE TREE UP.
AFTER AN HOUR AND ONE MINUTE, WE GOT THIRSTY AND WENT TO THE CONVENIENCE STORE AND BOUGHT A “SLURPEE”.
THE TREE WAS STILL STANDING WHEN WE GOT BACK.
THE BLUE JAY DECIDES TO RID HIS KINGDOM OF THE RED-TAILED HAWK…
I THINK WE NEED TO SEE A CLOSE-UP OF THIS…
JUST IN CASE A LAWSUIT IS FILED BY THE HAWK.
I DON’T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
DID THE BLUE JAY MAKE CONTACT?
I NOW HAVE A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF RESPECT (AND FEAR) FOR BLUE JAYS.
WELL…ONCE IN AWHILE YOU HAVE A DAY IN THE WOODS WHERE EVERYBODY IS ON EDGE…FLYING TOO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER…DIVE BOMBING AND USING INTIMIDATION TACTICS.
WHEN THIS KIND OF DAY STARTS TO UNFOLD YOU JUST HOPE THAT NOBODY GETS HURT AND THAT THINGS DON’T GO TOO FAR.
LIKE THIS…THIS IS GOING TOO FAR.
LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE TIME TO TAKE A CHOCOLATE BREAK, SHAKE HANDS AND MAKE UP.
