THIS IS WHAT YOU WRITE WHEN YOU’RE TIRED.

5920 Tired of hanging in there squirrel (39 of 1)

I ASKED THIS SQUIRREL WHAT IT WAS DOING AND IT SAID IT HAD DECIDED IT WANTED TO GET AWAY FROM ALL OF THE BOSSY ANIMALS THAT IT LIVED WITH IN THE WOODS…SO IT WAS GOING TO STAY UP ON IT’S BRANCH SO NO ONE WOULD BOTHER HIM.

I LISTENED FOR SOUNDS OF DISCONTENT IN THE WOODS BUT HEARD NOTHING. ABOUT HALF AN HOUR LATER, I BEGN HEARING AN OCCASIONAL OUTBURST COMING FROM THE DIRECTION OF THE SQUIRREL.

I LISTENED CLOSELY.

THE SQUIRREL SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DO SOME KIND OF ZEN THING…HUMMING, “OMMMM” ,TO HIMSELF, BUT IF HE HEARD THE SLIGHTEST SOUND  HE WOULD HURL AN INSULT DOWN AT THE OFFENDING, “RAT IN THE RAT RACE”…HIS WORDS NOT MINE.

HIS INSULTS WERE PERSONAL AND VERY HURTFUL… DIRECTED AT A CHIPMUNK…”OH PLEASE…CHEW A LITTLE LOUDER, THE OWL OVER IN THE NEXT COUNTY CAN’T HEAR YOU.”

A BUTTERFLY, HARMLESS, QUIET…WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY DO TO OFFEND THE SQUIRREL? THE SQUIRREL INFORMED THE ENTIRE WOODS WITH A LOUD SCREECH…”FIND A FLOWER AND LAND ALREADY, YOUR STUPID WINGS ARE MAKING THE AIR MOVE.”

OBVIOUSLY, THE ONLY BOSSY ANIMAL IN THE WOODS WAS THE SQUIRREL. I FELT SORRY FOR THE LADY BUGS WHEN THE SQUIRREL MADE FUN OF THEIR SPOTS.

I’M ASHAMED TO SAY THAT I WAS ALMOST HAPPY WHEN THE RED-TAILED HAWK SWOOPED IN AND SCREAMED AT THE SQUIRREL TO, “SHUT UP!”… WITH A SMALL SCREAM OF HIS OWN, THE SQUIRREL FELL OFF THE BRANCH, JUMPED IN THE RIVER AND SWAM AWAY…NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN.

THERE IS GREAT JOY IN THE WOODS AMONG ALL THE LITTLE CREATURES AND AS A SALUTE TO THE HAWK FOR RIDDING THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE BOSSY SQUIRREL, EACH TIME THE HAWK PASSES OVERHEAD THEY ALL SCREAM “SHUT-UP!”

DON’T YOU JUST LOVE A HAPPY ENDING? I’M SURE YOU’RE ALL JUST GLAD THAT I ENDED THIS, PERIOD.

  1. When I was a kid, my bedroom was next to an almost flat roof where every morning, just before dawn, the crows and the squirrels formed battle lines and went at it. Shrieking imprecations until I was ready to climb out there and settle the matter once and for all. Squirrels are NOT the noisiest. The crows are DEFINITELY noisier. Ruder, too.

    1. This was amazing 🙂 I mean your comment… And yes, my Angel, dear Suzanne, she did again, what a story and photograph in your lovely wood 🙂 Thank you for you all, Love, nia
