THIS, MY DEAR FRIENDS, IS WHAT YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE IN YOUR BACKYARD…YES….A MOUNTAIN LION….CAN YOU HEAR ME SCREAMING FROM WHERE YOU ARE?
THIS BACKYARD IS ONLY ABOUT FOUR MILES FROM MY BACKYARD.
THERE HAVE BEEN RUMORS OVER THE YEARS OF A MOUNTAIN LION IN OUR AREA…WE ARE IN THE MID-WEST…NOT THE WILD WEST…WE DON’THAVE MOUNTAINS AND BIG ROCK PERCHES FOR MOUNTAIN LIONS TO..WELL..PERCH ON. THIS BEING THE CASE, I DON’T KNOW WHY THEY WOULD LIKE LIVING HERE.
THIS PAST SATURDAY,ROCK PERCHES OR NO ROCK PERCHES… PROOF FINALLY EXISTS THAT THIS CAT IS LIVING AMONG US….EEEEYYYYAAAHHHHHH!!!!
NO WAY IS THIS A COYOTE…THEY DON’T HAVE TAILS LIKE THIS, THEY DON’T HAVE A HEAD SHAPED LIKE THIS.
THIS WAS TAKEN AT 1:30 PM….BY PEOPLE THAT I KNOW….THEY WERE VISITING WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS, SITTING ON THE PATIO……. SITTING ON THE PATIO…….NOW SEE, THAT’S WHERE I’M VERY DIFFERENT FROM THESE FOLKS….I WOULD BE FREAKING OUT ON THE PATIO!!
AFTER THAT…WELL, I MIGHT BE DRINKING IN MY CLOSET.
LOOK AT HOW BIG THAT ANIMAL IS…EVEN AT SUCH A DISTANCE IT’S OBVIOUS THAT IT’S LARGE…..LARGE!……I WOULD NOW LIKE AN EXTREMELY LARGE CHOCOLATE BAR TO HELP WITH MY ANXIETY….
NOW HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WALK MY DOG…WE’RE GOING TO NEED SOME SORT OF PROTECTION….TWO YEARS AGO, I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN THAT I SAW THIS CAT BESIDE MY GARAGE AT THE EDGE OF THE WOODS.
I WENT TO THE LOCAL SPORTING GOODS STORE TO FIND SOME PROTECTION, BUT THEY DON’T SELL BEAR SPRAY…THEY HAD A BIG MACHETE TYPE THING, BUT I’D PROBABLY END UP CUTTING MY LEG OFF.
HERE’S A CLOSE UP FOR YOUR SCRUTINY…NOT A GREAT SHOT…BUT I’M ASSUMING THIS WAS TAKEN WITH A CELL PHONE.
NOW PLEASE EXCUSE ME WHILE I GO FIND A ROCK TO PERCH ON IN MY CLOSET….ALONG WITH A LIQUID BEVERAGE…I HAVE SOME MORE SCREAMING TO DO.
Is it bad that all I could think of was that you could take much better pictures of it than your friends did? No offence to your friends but I am afraid it is up to you to photograph this creature now that you know it is there. We will send chocolate and alcohol…maybe chocolate alcohol.

Yes..send the chocolate and alcohol….just in case..I shall now glue myself to the window with my camera I’d LOVE to get an image of this animal!!
It made the evening paper…lead story…YOWZA!

Definitely feline but I can’t tell about the size. Want to note that although two subspecies are endangered, cougars overall are not endangered and certainly are not near extinction as someone said above.
My brother met one on a trail west of Boulder one day. He lifted his arms to make himself look as big as possible and slowly backed away. Safely. Generally cougars prefer to avoid humans unless they have cubs or are on a kill.
Better warn your deer friends that this guy is in the neighborhood.

I think they knew long before I did…haven’t seen hardly any this spring and summer!
Funny that you should mention your brother lifting his arms…when I take the dog out, I kind of bend by arms and hold them way out from my sides so that I look bigger..that’s a new event for me! I did read about the backing away slowly tip….Oh my lord…I didn’t even think of CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These big guys are nearly extinct. He’s probably an escapee or a former pet that someone “let go”. He was very likely someone’s pet — until he/she got too big and scary. That’s what happens to wild animals raised as pets. They wind up loose and eventually, someone shoots them. Because they are no longer wild, but not tame, either. There are so few of these big cats left. It’s a pity. Bad for everyone and especially for the cat. Because someone WILL kill him or her. I guarantee it.

You should be as delighted as I was to find there were leopards lurking just out of town, when I was a kid. Probably your lion has gained the same skill of keeping well clear of humans in order to remain invisible. It is a phenomenon featured in my forthcoming novel, as it happens. Everyone should leave very well enough alone!

Yikes! Leopards!! I can’t imagine…….You’ll have to let me know when the book comes out…
I’m a firm believer in, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Hopefully people will just be kind of thrilled that something so exotic is living in our area.

I would not want to encounter a Mountain Kitty – YIKES! I wonder if the Wildlife Department in your area knows about this cat or not. I am right there with you about freaking out – too close for comfort.

I asked again, if the Department of Natural Resources had been contacted and they said it had……They’re been waiting years for proof…and finally here it is!
I thought about taking a nice walk in the yard, but I’m not quite ready to do that…

You will have to be aware of your surroundings while out in the yard – be safe! The animals are moving around right now due to Fall approaching and any lack of food or water will bring them closer to the humans too.

Ickkkkk….I won’t let the dog step out the door until I’ve taken a good look around…

Our most famous person, Dr David Livingston was attacked by a lion. He survived and so will you.
There is a statue in his memorial gardens in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire of him being attacked by the lion. He survived and so will you!

I appreciate the encouragement! What a story about Dr. Livingston!

Yes. Born in the small mill town of Blantyre he worked 14 hours a day in the cotton mill but still managed to get an education and become a doctor of medicine.
When he died his faithful African attendants Chuma and Susi carried his embalmed body over 1,000 miles to the coast to Bagamoyo, and was returned to Britain for burial. What a journey for them to make.
He is buried in Westminster Abbey which is the final resting place of many English and Scottish monarchs.

You are about as likely to be struck by lightning as to be attacked by a puma. Relax and enjoy this sign that there is still more wild nature in your area than you thought. I’d sure love to see one! In fact, we were elated to see a wolf near our cabin in Minnesota just the day before yesterday!

You make a very good point!
I’d love to see one in person too…but from a safe distance.
You saw a WOLF!?? WOW!

Had one – a BIG mountain lion – cross the road down from our place in NM mountains. It had a black face. It was so large and unusual looking to this day my husband refers to it as CatDog. Yes we named the critter. Now that we live in fl all I gotta worry about is Gators, bears, wild pigs, mini rattlers, (hard to spot in grass) and oh yea – a big wolf! Just a few critters coming out from the preserve here. I’m on the west coast – Hernando Beach. I’ve seen more here than in NM!
I’d say carry a gun walking the dog.
I stay indoors. I don’t take walks. Not good for my health. : )

Holy Shiitake! It sure is a mountain lion. They frequent our area quite often. We’re always told to not let our pets out at night, even larger dogs. We keep spotlights on our back yard at night. The neighbors aren’t crazy about it but neither of them have “furry kids.” I’m not about to lose my dog to a mountain lion. Be safe, my friend.

Would it help to have bear spray if I can find some..or even order some online?
I work at the back of our property sometimes and it’s about as far back..maybe a little farther from the house,as this property is..
We’ve been careful with taking our little guy out..my rule over the last 12 years is that he always has to be on a leash…because of the coyotes, and he has a tendency to just slowly meander off into the unknown.
I keep thinking about that news report where the woman was dragged off of her bike in Colorado, or somewhere like that, and had her face badly mauled….Dear God..this is a little scary…

Use caution. Years ago, we had a mountain lion outside my parents’ bedroom in the bamboo. My father made a lot of noise, and it disappeared. We formed a horseback posse the next day and went hunting it, but it had gone back to the mountains. Be careful. Phone the animal patrol .

Now you have an idea of the paranoia I suffered this summer with reports of a cougar in our area, and me with a puppy that needed to go out to pee in the middle of the night. Be careful out there. They love dogs and cats.
