MY MORNING WITH EDGAR…

Edgar and purse (1 of 1)

SO THIS MORNING I DROVE OVER TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL TO GIVE BLOOD.  AS IT TURNED OUT, DUE TO A MEETING THE OFFICE WAS CLOSED.

ON THE WAY INTO THE BUILDING, I NOTICED “EDGAR”  BALANCING ON THE SIDEWALK.  HE WAS ACTUALLY STANDING ON HIS HEAD..THE BREEZE KEPT LIFTING HIS TAIL AND HE WAS GRIPPING THE SIDEWALK TO STAY WHERE HE WAS.  I SPENT ABOUT TEN MINUTES IN THE BUILDING AND WHEN I CAME BACK OUT HE WAS STILL ON THE SIDEWALK…

I HAD PLANNED TO GIVE BLOOD YESTERDAY, BUT WE HAD A “POP-UP” STORM, SIXTY MILE AN HOUR WINDS AND HAIL..TREE BRANCHES DOWN..A FEW POWER LINES DOWN HERE AND THERE. I DIDN’T WANT TO GET CAUGHT UP IN ALL OF THAT SO I STAYED HOME.  FROM THE LOOKS OF HIM, EDGAR HADN’T STAYED HOME AND PAID THE PRICE.  TWO OF HIS WINGS WERE CRUMPLED A BIT ON THE ENDS.  MAYBE I WAS SUPPOSED TO DRIVE OVER THERE TODAY…SO THAT I COULD FIND EDGAR.

I COULDN’T JUST WALK ON BY, KNOWING THAT AT SOME POINT HE WAS GOING TO GET STEPPED ON…I OFFERED HIM A FINGER AND HE CLIMBED UP AND WE WENT FOR A WALK…I WALKED HIM OVER TO THEIR LITTLE GARDEN, BUT I DIDN’T FEEL LIKE THERE WAS ENOUGH SHADE.  WE WALKED TO THE PARKING GARAGE AND HE RODE WITH ME OVER TO A MEDICAL BUILDING ON THE PROPERTY THAT HAD SOME WOODS BY THE PARKING LOT….NO GOOD…THE WEEDS DIDN’T LOOK VERY NICE.

WE DROVE OVER TO ANOTHER BUILDING ON THE HOSPITAL CAMPUS…WOODS…WATER…BUT BIRDS…I DON’T KNOW IF THEY EAT DRAGONFLIES, BUT EDGAR AND I DIDN’T WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE.  SO WE GOT BACK IN THE CAR AGAIN.  EACH TIME HE HAD TO CLIMB ON AND OFF OF MY FINGER AND WHEN HE WAS IN THE CAR HE RODE ON MY PURSE.

SO THEN WE WENT TO BARNES AND NOBLE…I DECIDED THE CAR WAS TOO HOT, SO I GENTLY PUT HIM INTO MY PURSE AND WE HEADED FOR THE DOOR. I WHISPERED TO HIM ON THE WAY IN THAT HE HAD TO BE QUIET…HE MIGHT SCARE SOMEBODY…WE WERE ONLY IN FOR A FEW MINUTES AND HE WAS JUST FINE WHEN I TOOK HIM OUT OF MY PURSE.

I LET HIM STAY IN THE CAR WHILE I WENT INTO THE DRUG STORE AND BOUGHT WATER.  FINALLY WE HAD DONE OUR SHOPPING AND AGREED IT WAS TIME TO GO FIND A GOOD SPOT FOR HIM IN THE WOODS OUTSIDE OF MY WINDOW.  HE HELD ONTO MY PURSE THE WHOLE WAY HOME AND STAYED THERE HAPPILY WHILE I DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE ABOUT WHAT SNACKS HE MIGHT LIKE…HOW TO GIVE HIM WATER, ETC.

SINCE I DON’T KEEP ANY FLYING INSECTS IN THE HOUSE OR DEW DROPS ON MY PLANTS IT WAS TIME TO TAKE HIM OUTSIDE SO THAT HE COULD PERCH…I GUESS THEY CAN CATCH INSECTS AND DRINK DEW DROPS THAT WAY.  IT TOOK ABOUT FIVE TINY RELOCATIONS UNTIL WE FOUND JUST THE RIGHT SPOT…AND THAT WAS MY MORNING WITH EDGAR.

  1. Aw, he’s so sweet! I’ve been enjoying my backyard dragonflies, too, Suzanne, but they look different. It’s the differences that fascinate me. My little friends are either blue or very bright orange. THey don’t live very long but they are so special while they grace us! 🙂

  2. how touching… poor one… I had an experience like that today, impressed me so much. Thank you dear Suzanne, have a nice weekend, love, nia

  3. Nice story. You are kind. We enjoyed a 5km hike around Emerald Lake in the high Rockies northwest of Banff. Sadly, the camera battery ran down. Our memories are with us anyway. Imagine, that’s how it was. Beautiful.

  4. Nurse Suzanne… a small wing reconstruction may have helped… I know how you felt, and it was kind of you to give him a nice spot to end his days… who knows, maybe he managed to straighten his wings and take off again.. but then he may also have reached the end of his life span and instead of underfoot or on the grill of some fast moving vehicle, he got to spend it in a nice shady spot away from the dangers of humans… you have such a big heart, a soft heart, and one that shows your concern for nature… love it..

        1. You’ve got me thinking 🙂 You know you’re right don’t you?? I’m sitting here right now and the little hamster wheels in my brain are turning!!

  5. ‘Lovely tale’. Hope Edgar is recovering and enjoying his new surroundings 😛
All the best to both of you,
    Hanna

  6. I love this line …”I OFFERED HIM A FINGER AND HE CLIMBED UP AND WE WENT FOR A WALK”…
I wouldn’t have wanted him to get stepped on either, so well done for rescuing this beautiful little creature. I hope he recovers himself in your woods and has a happy little life… it might be an idea to put out extra peanuts for your birdie friends so they don’t go looking for insect snacks whilst he is recovering.
