THINKING IT OVER…
Yesterday, one of the deer that I watch..”Trace” showed up with her triplets…she was injured…….I previously posted a more detailed “article”, but I took it down…..it’s been an upsetting experience…..so I’m going to take a little time to move past the experience…and hopefully by next week I’ll be back, reporting on my silly squirrel and bird friends. Have a good weekend everybody.

I wish you, Trace and her family all the very best. I did not read your other post, but I certainly understand the pain you’re going thru. Hugs.
October 14, 2012 at 3:04 am
Thank you..I’m hoping that she pulls through…
October 14, 2012 at 3:25 am
So sorry suzanne, I totally agree with you and it made me physically ill to read about it. It is stupid and pointless. I will never understand hunting for “sport” and being such a lousy hunter that you leave a beautiful animal in that state. WTF is wrong with people who think that is fun?
October 14, 2012 at 2:44 am
I couldn’t believe my unfortunate luck this morning..I was setting up my booth at the Art Festival and the fellow in the booth next to me was talking to a friend…He said that he was helping his wife get ready and then he would get to go “play”……He was going bow-hunting…..I walked right out of my booth and down the block…I didn’t want to say something that I would regret……I feel just as you do….how can they think this is fun…
October 14, 2012 at 3:27 am
Wow. I probably would have gone up to him and said why do you get to play but the animals you choose to play with have no choice, it’s not a game to them, losing their life because you think it is fun. A-holes.
October 14, 2012 at 6:13 pm
I want you with me next time!
October 14, 2012 at 6:18 pm
We’ll kick his ass suzanne!
October 14, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Hahahahahahaha!
October 14, 2012 at 9:13 pm
Hugs, Suzanne. I’m sorry. Debra
October 12, 2012 at 3:07 pm
Thank you Debra…I feel o.k. enough with this now to start watching for Trace and the triplets..I put corn out each night fort them…
October 14, 2012 at 3:28 am
I read it and cried. Totally understandable how you feel. Take your time and know that there’s lots of love around you. Be well and stay blessed … you are, you know.
October 12, 2012 at 12:07 am
Thank you Gina…all of the kind thoughts and messages have been really helpful….I have only cried a little…I think my brain is still holding off the reality of this…..I talked to the ” DNR ” and they said that there is a chance that Trace will survive this…..In the meantime I’m still putting out corn for them…hoping, and not hoping, that I see the family together…I’m afraid to look…but I also want to know that she is still alive…The love helps a lot ….
October 14, 2012 at 3:31 am
Missed it – but see you when you are ready.
October 11, 2012 at 9:42 pm
I missed your post, Suzanne, but I’m so sorry that Trace was injured. Hope the triplets are fine. Hugs to all of you.
October 11, 2012 at 5:59 pm
Hugs to you too….Thank you..
October 14, 2012 at 3:32 am
So so sorry.
glad you have your family, and the rest of the menagerie to help you along.
And you’re always welcome to be goofy over email!

I understand how heartbreaking this is for you. I fed the deer in my yard for a few years and whenever one was hurt, it was very upsetting for me because there was nothing I could do to help. One of the deer I fed was blind in one eye and she practically lived in our yard. She must have been about seven years old when her time came and she died over a matter of many days, wheezing with pneumonia, it was so painful to watch. After that, I stopped feeding the deer and pulled back a bit from letting them be part of my life. The herd wandered farther down the road to another neighbour who still feeds them, and I have less grief, if only for sticking my head in the sand.
October 11, 2012 at 5:15 pm
I think my head is going to join yours down in the sand…I’ve seen injured animals before and can put it in perspective…but this is just such a stupid thing for someone to have done….I don’t want to see something like this again.
October 14, 2012 at 3:33 am
Unfortunately some people think bow hunting is “cool” because it’s more of a challenge than just taking the easy shot with a rifle, but in fact, many arrows only maim and don’t kill the deer. At least not right away. So for the sake of someone’s ego, I don`t think it`s right to torture animals like this. Now I’ve got all the bow hunters mad at me. Can’t win.
October 14, 2012 at 2:53 pm
I’m sure that they’re mad at me too…but…we’re allowed to have our feelings and opinions…so….
October 14, 2012 at 2:59 pm
Tragic… I read the other post and have just got back to civilisation and wanted to comment on it… oh well to late… take it easy and see you next week…
October 11, 2012 at 3:38 pm
Glad you’re back safe and sound..I took the earlier post down because it seemed…self-indulgent?….I don’t know what…..I understand hunting and know that there is a place for it in the world at times….but this is a sad situation…just needless suffering, and the next generation depending on her..
October 14, 2012 at 3:36 am
I agree with you whole heartily … as a youngster I did my share of shooting, taught by my Father to take a dead shot or miss… I missed a lot probably as I was slowly discovering the beauty of seeing the animals alive… it did not last long and quickly turn around to a camera which is impossible to wound or kill… I know there is a place for hunting and reducing numbers of animals so that they can survive in the smaller areas we humans have forced them to live… yet I don’t want to see it or hear about it… and the wounding of animals is unforgivable… I still don’t see why people are allowed to hunt with bows and arrows, a rifle has a bigger chance of killing an animal even if its wounded… an arrow can stay stuck for ages without reaching a critical spot to finally kill… I hope she makes it through and feel your anguish of the situation…
October 14, 2012 at 5:46 am
I agree with you. I wish they would eliminate bow hunting….archery competitions, fine…that is a sport…hunting with bow and arrow…..unnecessary..I’ll be back today with some silly chipmunk antics and move past this…
October 14, 2012 at 1:23 pm
Unfortunately, attaching ourselves to animals brings so many joys that it is difficult to deal with the down side moments. Smiles and hugs from several hours away.
October 11, 2012 at 1:40 pm
Thank you Frank…I appreciate the ” hugs “…..
October 14, 2012 at 3:36 am
Suzanne, so sorry to hear about this. My hear is with you and with all your friends in nature.
October 11, 2012 at 1:37 pm
Thank you Lorna….
October 14, 2012 at 3:38 am
I also read the other post… how awful…
do you have a vet friend who can come over with a tranquillizer dart, and treat Trace under sedation so she can recover?
Can you put food out for her and the young ones so that she doesn’t have to search so much and can conserve her strength? Could a vet put antibiotics in some food?
I have no clue of any of this is feasible.. and yes hunters are despicable, no animal deserves this inhumane treatment.
I wish, Trace (and you) Strength.
October 11, 2012 at 1:29 pm
I spoke with our regional Department of Natural Resources Officer….The only options are for them to shoot her…or let her try to make it…they prefer to let her try to recover..and of course, that is what I want………I just hope that she’s not suffering too much…..I wish that I could somehow show this hunter the results of their inept hunting abilities, and ask them if they feel good about this….They’d would definitely remember meeting “Suzanne…defender of the deer”..
October 14, 2012 at 3:41 am
Things to feel good about: You are the kindest most animal friendly soul. That translates. Trace and her babies feel safe coming to the little haven in your space. She knew you would see her. She knew you and your readers would pray for her recovery.
My boyfriend and I spent a good hour going through your blog the other day marveling at the photos, the talent, the nature, the complete beauty of every single post.
I didn’t read the other post, but as a person that picks up every stray dog and finds it a home, as someone that prays for every little animal soul that met a bad end on the side of the road, and as someone that relocates every single turtle sunning himself on the asphalt (I can’t even tell you how many turtles I’ve had crawling around the floorboard of my car)— I totally understand your heartache. Thinking of you!
October 11, 2012 at 12:10 pm
Awwwwww..you are such a kind person..and a kindred soul…..Thank you for your wonderful words about my photographs….I feel such a respect and sense of wonder at the beauty of all of these animals…and feel blessed that I recognize and can ” see ” that beauty…I’m putting corn out for Trace and the babies every night…and I hope that Trace in particular is being sustained by this…..Thank you again..so very much.
October 14, 2012 at 3:44 am
Poor Trace. I don’t know what I would do either. It is a very sad thing that you have witnessed. Take care.
October 11, 2012 at 12:01 pm
Thank you Michelle…..It is a very tough experience…I want to watch each night to make sure that she is still with us…but I’m also afraid to look and see what her condition is…all I can do is put corn out for her and the little ones each night and hope that it is helping them.
October 14, 2012 at 3:46 am
Don’t worry Suzanne – Trace will be fine!!! Positive thoughts
. I would hate to see those babies without their mommy, so she has to get better!!
October 11, 2012 at 11:07 am
From your lips..to God’s ears….Thank you so much.
October 14, 2012 at 3:46 am
The ‘like’ relates to your reaction, not to the event, which I read in full before you took it down. The immature sub-humans who regard this as ‘sport’ should be exposed and subjected to the reactions of disgust and the shame they deserve. Even in the hunting fraternity, that is the sign of someone too inept to be allowed out in the field.
October 11, 2012 at 10:10 am
You have expressed this very well…I have been searching for a way to express what I would like the person who did this to feel….and Shame is the word…I wish they would feel shame for having done this…but I fear that they do not and would not.
October 14, 2012 at 3:48 am
Maybe being subjected to ridicule, as utterly inept and unfit to go hunting, would get to such people far more.
October 14, 2012 at 9:12 am
I think you’re right..I would hope that you’re right..
October 14, 2012 at 1:20 pm
I’m sorry. I didn’t read the other post, but I wish everything will be fine
October 11, 2012 at 9:57 am
Thank you….I’m hoping also..that everything will be fine.
October 14, 2012 at 3:48 am
best wishes to you. your animal friends will be cheerful companions.
October 11, 2012 at 8:00 am
The little chipmunks are helping me ..
October 14, 2012 at 3:49 am
are they bringing you chocolate?
October 14, 2012 at 4:50 am
How did you know?….I’m going to show you all what they’ve been up to…..onward we go
October 14, 2012 at 1:24 pm
This is very sad, Suzanne. It must be like a mortal injury to a family member. My heart goes out to you.
October 11, 2012 at 4:49 am
Thank you….It is like finding that a family member is in a very tough, precarious state and all that you can do is wait….
October 14, 2012 at 3:50 am
Oh I’m so sorry.
October 11, 2012 at 4:40 am
Thank you…
October 14, 2012 at 3:50 am
I read the other post too. This is so terrible.
October 11, 2012 at 4:17 am
It is terrible….I just want to know that she’ll be o.k….I’ve learned that she has a chance to recover…but only time will tell…and it’s so hard to wait for time to resolve things
October 14, 2012 at 3:51 am
I am so sorry. I did read the other post, too, and I sure hope that Trace survives.
October 11, 2012 at 3:54 am
Thank you…..I’m praying that she and the babies will be o.k. and that she will recover…
