WOULD YOU CHEW ON A FENCE?….
There are days for all of us, I’m sure, when things just seem to pile up and pile up….when things get rough, just remember…..chewing on a fence never helped anybody.

Your thoughts fascinate me........so go on....fascinate me.
I personally, don’t prefer the taste of wooden fences hahaha

Who would take offence at chewing on a fence or find it of-fence-ive? It is merely de-fence-ive behaviour! As well as being good exercise for the chompers.

hehehe!

“Chewing on a fence never helped anyone” I must remember that!

Hi, found your blog reposted on Animal Lovers’ Blog and stopped by to take a look. Being a horse person, of course I looked at this post. Gotta tell you, sometimes chewing on a fence does indeed help. From the way the horse’s upper lip is pulled back, I’d say he (?) is doing what we call “cribbing”, which is grabbing the rail with his upper teeth, pulling on it and making a lovely (sarcasm) grunting sound. According to some who have studied this scientifically, it’s akin to “runner’s high” for a horse–a big endorphin rush. Only wish it worked for me…cheers!

HI! Thanks for stopping in
It’s so funny that you should come by today…I just returned from visiting the herd that I photograph and I was told that this was called “cribbing”!! What an amazing coincidence.!! Thanks for the info, you gave me a more complete explanation..gotta love the weird grunting noise! LOL!

I’m sort of a self-educated expert on the topic because my own dear horse has been doing this since the day I got him, over 10 years ago. In England it used to be (and sometimes still is) considered a “vice”, and many boarding stables would not take in horses with the habit. Studies of Thoroughbred foals tracked over several years seem to indicate that it’s caused by feeding heavy meals of grain too early (they want them big and strong so they can race at only 2 years old). The young horses seem to figure out that they can ease the stomach discomfort caused by grain they aren’t ready for by engaging in this behavior. Besides being an upper, it apparently also serves as an analgesic. The big question is how the horse figures this out. Old myths say that they learn it from one another, but again the studies have shown that non-cribbing horses stabled next to the cribbers do not pick up the habit. So the mystery continues…

So Sunday I was our watching Zebras in a pasture – they spotted me and walked over to see what was up and guess what they did next – they chewed on the fence….maybe it’s the international horse substitute for chewing gum.

Ha! I think you may be on to something!

I hope never to get so hungry or bored as to take to chewing on fences. But if I do, I hope to look that adorable!

This was my first thought too – at least the fence is wood, not metal! And no, I did not stick my tongue on the railway tracks in winter like some dumb kids I know. (Didn’t do it in the summer either.)

ewwwwwwww!! SCARY!!!!!!!!!!
October 2, 2012 at 9:16 pm
Suzanne, LOVE the new look! You look gorgeous! About the fence. At least he isn’t sticking his tongue to a pole. Beautiful photo!
October 2, 2012 at 7:16 pm
LOL! I keep thinking the same thing about the tongue….It just gives you that feeling that you need to yell..NO! NO! Stop! Don’t lick that!!!!
I was a little nervous about going for the new look and then I thought…what the heck…I’m going for it…I’ve been happy with it so far! Really easy to take care of and perfect for when I’m out shooting on a windy day…

So what do I do about the splinters in my tongue and cheeks?
October 2, 2012 at 1:30 pm
LOLOLOL! First I would suggest that you get yourself to a dentist…possibly they could help…then I would suggest that you get your head examined…a few gray cells seem to be missing up in there…

WOW!! That’s such a HUGE compliment! I know that they had their crazy imaginations oozing out of their pores way before they got to entertain me with it…but if I in some way encourage the “silly”, then I’m thrilled
