SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT…

This is not a bird that people get real excited about…but I really enjoy them…

this is  a crow..and a backyard visitor..they’re very smart and very entertaining,

and they’re scared of squirrels…even though they’re bigger than the squirrels!

  2. Yes they are very intelligent, did you know that they can learn to speak ? Each summer I have a couple who raise their chicks in my yard.
    Your photo is amazing.

    • Well first of all .. thank you….They can learn to speak??

      June 10, 2012 at 3:23 am

      • Yes they can ! They are among the world’s most intelligent animals. According to Wikipedia some crows species have a region in their brain “approximately the same relative size as the functionally equivalent neocortex in chimpanzees and humans”. Apparently they can speak better than parrots. Amazing isn’t it ?

        • WOW!! I had heard that they have face recognition and actually recognize and remember humans who have behaved in a positive way towards them and those who have behaved negatively toward them….Just the most amazing birds!

    • Aren’t their eyes pretty?? And I love their jet-black wings…

      June 9, 2012 at 12:45 pm

  10. We have them here too. They are quite big and they scare off the pigeons which I don’t mind too much…

  11. Crows….we have them here in th U.K. with close relatives, Ravens, Rooks and Jackdaws (not sure if you have those species). They all show the same agility, cunning and when needed muscle to get their own way. The eye locks on and that is it! Great birds and more colour in black than you first imagine.

    June 9, 2012 at 8:06 am

    • I KNOW!! There’s blue and every shade of black…just much prettier than you would think at first glance!

      June 9, 2012 at 12:46 pm

  14. Well, you know what Edgar Allan Poe said about crows….
We also have to protect our robin’s nest. The crows try to attack the baby birds. They are very clever.

    • Ooooooooh,,little devils !!!!!!

      June 9, 2012 at 12:47 pm

  15. Great close-up! I’d be scared of your squirrels, too, especially the crazy one :-)

    June 9, 2012 at 4:38 am

    • I don’t blame them for their fear…that ninja squirrel even WALKS differently..!!!

      June 9, 2012 at 12:48 pm

  16. Around our yard they’ve killed all the baby robins.

    June 9, 2012 at 4:09 am

    • Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !! :( That’s TERRIBLE!! I didn’t know they’d do that!!!!!!

      June 9, 2012 at 4:22 am

      • To make it worse, the crows had a nest in the neighbours big fir trees and I think I know what the crow babies got for breakfast several days in a row. Makes me sick! I know crows are smart, but I do like robins.
