In French, “antlers” are called “les bois”, which literally means “the woods” as in wooden things, not a group of trees. They ARE wooden things but they also drop off and regrow and look like branches. Of course, on trees, it’s the leaves that fall off, but it’s similar. As well as that, each season when the antlers grow back (a bit bigger each year – more “points” or branches) they are covered in a soft envelope which could be likened to moss, and which the stags rub against trees until it comes off. They are fascinating animals. Both stags (with their antlers) and leafless trees are symbols of Death in the old imagery language, before everyone was able to read.
End of today’s lecture on wildlife. Don’t forget the guide on the way out!

I’m just a guy with a limerick reply…
There is an old elk in the wild,
He’s fathered many a child;
His harem is large,
They know he’s in charge,
He’s also equipped with much guile.

They’re so beautiful. On my Yellowstone trip, I saw whole arches made of these antlers, in Jackson Hole. They were amazing.

I’ll bet you DO miss the West….I was really amazed to see all of the antlers! They gather them up as they maintain “the range”, and stack them for all to admire
