My lovely mother turns 80 in just a few weeks..you would think this woman is 29……..she gardens, has written two books about our family’s genealogy …makes jewelry that she sells at art fairs. She paints with oils, and is hired to paint portraits…there is more, but you get the idea…
My sister and I are having a party for her and I would like your helI with some fresh ideas!!! (that is supposed to say “help” but my iPad won’t let me change it.
I want to do something during the party for a fun surprise, but I am out of ideas…
This could be a game, or something that involves her getting prizes.
Keep your ideas suitable for a G rated audience please,,:)
I’m counting on you team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For La Donna on THE DAY:
A lady never likes her age
Revealed for all to see
I hope it will not make you rage
To find that all of we
Throughout the world are well apprized
Exactly what it is -
In fact, I’d hardly be surprised,
If, “‘Tis none of your biz!”
Was yelled by you in righteous rage,
Reacting to the fact
That we know eighty is your age -
Is that a lack of tact?
But anyway, some warm congrats
From Africa, south end,
(And Durban is a city that’s
Got lots of warmth to send!)

May 22, 2012 at 2:08 pm

May 30, 2012 at 3:51 pm
sounds wonderful!
May 30, 2012 at 5:34 pm
Wonderful idea! My card will go out tomorrow. My idea is for a Love Jar. Paint a special jar or decorate with what she likes and have everyone write down what they love about her. All notes get put into her jar and she can pull one out every day to feel the love all over again. God bless you and your Mom. We will all look forward to your account of her party
May 21, 2012 at 8:24 pm
Love jar purchased and already contains some notes! Pretty green and white polka dot ribbon to wrap around it!
May 30, 2012 at 3:52 pm
How cool! There’s no way to give too much love. Can’t wait to see pictures of her special event.
May 30, 2012 at 4:26 pm
What an awesome idea Sis… I’ll tell you what we did when my mother in law turned 60 years old… we wrote notes…60 of them… and on each note we wrote a memory or thought about her… things we loved her for, things she had done, special statements she used to make…you can put anything on a note. Try to do that with as much people around her and hang them in the entire house/ or place where you will celebrate the party!
I can only tell you my mother in law LOVED it…and collected all the notes and put them in a beautiful book… Just an idea…you only have to write 80 notes LOL
And OF COURSE I will send my ‘adopted’ mother a birthdaycard…when will her birthday be? xoxo Goodluck with your preparations
May 21, 2012 at 7:05 pm
I love this idea little Sis!! I may combine yours with Gina’s … 80 notes!!! I LOVE IT!!! Oh she’s going to love her birthday!! You guys are helping to make it SO much more special!!
May 21, 2012 at 8:48 pm
thanks Suzanne, but we are not making it special…YOU are …we are only helping you a bit by giving some of our ideas
Love to hear what you are going to do when you collected all the advice and ideas and even more love to hear how your mother react….

The things that have worked best at parties such as this that I’ve attended (and what we did for my mom’s 80th) was to have plenty of pictures of her life. My sister made a video and we had a script that about her life that my brother read (was a separate thing from the video). We had people sign a book and asked them to write a memory. Some just signed it, but it was great keepsake.
May 21, 2012 at 1:58 pm
Well we did it! This past Saturday! I will report back after the party Saturday
May 30, 2012 at 3:54 pm
For my dad’s 80th, we announced an Open House in the paper …. and he had a good time.
BTW – great idea on the cards … the date?
May 21, 2012 at 1:36 pm
Rats!! Did I ever tell you the date? June 6! But you know what they say,,better late then never,,it will just extend her birthday fun if any arrive after the day
May 30, 2012 at 3:55 pm
I want to send card too dear Suzanne, I hope our post service works on time… She seems amazing lady, I wiahed to meet her… or to be in her party. Maybe you can make a little book about her, with her works, photographs, etc. handmade book… Thank you dear Suzanne, Blessing and Happiness to you all, love, nia
May 21, 2012 at 11:39 am
Thank you for the wonderful ideas nia! I wish you could be here too! She’s going to have fun I’m sure on her special day. I will post a report next week,,,the party is this Saturday and I am finally ready
May 30, 2012 at 3:56 pm
She sounds delightful!
May 21, 2012 at 11:00 am
She’s a force!
May 30, 2012 at 3:57 pm
What about making a special video to be shown during the party? She could have her own documentary, with the touch of zaniness that you’re known for.
May 21, 2012 at 10:39 am
Or another idea…since she gardens, what about making her an analemmatic sundial for her garden (if her yard is big enough) and announce it at the party? This is a fun type of sundial where you stand on it and your own shadow helps you to determine what time it is.
May 21, 2012 at 11:50 am
Well, you went and did it……report will be filed on Monday,,stay tuned
May 30, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Oh fun! Eighty is a special birthday – how about a fun treasure hunt just for her? Outside or inside – with hints leading her to the next surprise gift, etc. ? It’s nice that you want to celebrate in a fun and special way with her.
Pam (and Sam)

Sorry I can’t think of anything to help but then I’m a man and stupid when it comes to things like that. Will send a card now as our post is not too quick. I’m sure all the Ladies that follow you will come up with ideas for you.
May 21, 2012 at 6:43 am
HI,
What a great idea asking for idea’s.
Unfortunately I just can’t think of anything at the moment, but I’m sure plenty will come through for you.
What a lovely thought to get cards from all the corners of the world, you will have to give a bit of a reminder when it gets a bit closer, it will take a few days to get there from OZ.
May 21, 2012 at 4:06 am
If I didn’t thank you already,,,,thank you! She’ll have so much fun when she receives the card!
May 30, 2012 at 3:58 pm
My mom just turned 84. At one of her birthday parties, everyone had to share a short anecdote about mom. There were some duzees (sp?).
Hope she has a great birthday and hope I remember to send a card.
May 21, 2012 at 3:42 am
Awwwwwww, thank you for considering sending a card…I like your idea!!
May 21, 2012 at 3:48 am
Love to send a card! Should it just be a happy birthday, or should it say we know her daughter from the online world?
Is there a period of family history that particularly fascinates her You could dress in period costumes or as ancestors.
Decorate the room with whimsical garden implements or decorations?
Would she enjoy an oil painting of her gardening with Baldy watching?
May 21, 2012 at 1:23 am
I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE PERIOD COSTUME! She painted a picture of a woman from a certain time period, by the name of Anne Bradstreet..a copy of her painting is used in a lot of educational text books..she used my Sister as her model..TA – DA!! My Sister could dress as her!! AWESOME!
Besides, I think Baldy might scare her…..
OOOOOOHHH, what if we dressed BALDY up as Anne? The mind is reeling!
I LOVE that you’re thinking of sending her a card,,she would get such a kick out of it…I don’t know,,what do you think? Just Happy birthday?
Thanks El Guapo, you’re the best!

What fun!
My mother’s 80th was 2 years ago. We had a small family luncheon at one of my sister’s homes. But the 4 of us spent weeks beforehand planning the entertainment- we took some showtune music and created our own lyrics, ie, “My Favorite Things” referred to our favorite foods. We bought gold colored leather gloves- the Golden Hands award- she’s a big knitter- for all the things she’s made, cooked, etc. Have fun planning- whatever you do will be wonderful and appreciated!
May 21, 2012 at 1:02 am
awwww, thanks so much!!!!!! You have definitely helped to get my mind clicking!!!!! You did a wonderful
Job for your Mom’s birthday
May 21, 2012 at 2:36 am
